NEW YORK—In the age of MySpace and Facebook, something as mundane as one twirling spaghetti over dinner can be snapped, tagged and shared with the rest of cyberspace.
I caught up recently with former Preview fashion editor and now stylist-to-the-stars Anne Bella for tips and tricks on getting ready for one’s camera close-up.
Bella, who has worked behind the scenes on advertising projects for Robinsons Department Store, Timex and Cream Silk, shared these tidbits:
1. Get photogenic hair. A trick that works both in shoots and in real life is having bouncy, touchable tresses. “Create volume by flipping your head forward, spritzing hairspray on roots, and then flipping your head back,” says Bella.
“Sometimes it also helps to not shampoo everyday,” she adds. Day-old hair gives out natural shine and texture.
2. Go for classy, classic makeup. Sure, your online profile can feature artsy shots of you sporting super smoky eyes and mega-fringes, but if you’re attending a special occasion (e.g. a friend’s wedding), go easy on the heavy makeup.
“You want to look like yourself. Now’s not the time to pile on makeup or try on different looks,” says Bella. She recommends this tried-and-tested regimen: Pat on powder to minimize shine, swipe on blush for a healthy glow, and finish with a berry lip tint and a coat of mascara on curled lashes.
3. Work your outfit. V-shaped necklines are universally flattering, “but it also depends on what looks good on you and what suits your personality.”
Bella stresses finding the outfit that flatters your body, is comfortable and looks great no matter what. This way, you avoid that unflattering candid shot with your puson [paunch] sticking out, or worse—your underwear showing.
4. Learn your angle. Celebrities and models usually know their best side, and they inform the photographer or director accordingly. You, too, can find your most flattering angle.
“Practice your smile in front of the mirror,” suggests Bella. “You could even ask a friend to snap a few pics of you from different angles, and from here find your best shot.”
As for looking as calm, candid and collected as you can in a random snapshot, Bella decodes the famous “Smile with your eyes” tactic used by many industry insiders: “Exhale as you smile and think happy thoughts. This helps you relax and makes your smile come out more naturally.”
